IMAGE function

Puts a picture from the web inside a cell, where it moves and sorts with the data.

Works in desktop Excel only

Syntax

=IMAGE(source, [alt_text], [sizing], [height], [width])

How to use IMAGE in Excel, step by step

IMAGE doesn’t run in a web practice sheet because it downloads a picture from the internet into a cell. Follow these steps in Excel itself.

You’ll need

  • Microsoft 365 (Windows, Mac, web or mobile)
  • An image URL that starts with https:// (BMP, JPG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, ICO or WEBP)
  1. Copy an image address. In your browser right-click an image › Copy image address. It must start with https://.
  2. Write the formula. Type =IMAGE("https://…/logo.png","Company logo"). The second argument is alt text for screen readers.
  3. Choose how it fits. sizing 0 = fit in the cell (default), 1 = fill the cell, 2 = original size, 3 = custom height and width in pixels: =IMAGE(A2,"Logo",3,40,80).
  4. Use it in a table. Put URLs in a column and use =IMAGE(B2) next to each one, then copy down.

Example

=IMAGE("https://www.example.com/logo.png","Logo")

Result: The picture shown inside the cell

#BLOCKED! means image downloads are turned off in your organisation’s settings.
